Scapin is a canonical character, a cunning servant, which the great comedy writer of the French classicism in the last years of his theatre career used to return to traditions of commedia dell' arte. He was strongly criticized for it as he supposedly abandoned problem comedy for a popular farce. Nevertheless, Molière provided the modern theatre repertoire with one of the most brilliant, intelligent and efficient situational comedy of all times!
