The group Orlek has its domicile in Zagorje ob Savi, in the heart of the mining area in the center of Slovenia. The name Orlek originates from the name of the hill at the very edge of Zagorje. Their music is a mixture of rock’n’roll, some sort of “folk punk polka rock”. Due to variety of instruments they were spontaneously ranged into ethnic folk music. Their texts have social and humorous connotation. They established a “full” contact and filled the audience with enthusiasm.
This has been proved by successful performances on festivals – WOM festivals: Tanz & Folk Fest in Rudolstadt (Germany), Folk Fiesta (Poland), Druga godba (Slovenia), Musikfest in Bethlehem (USA), Arts Festival Lahore (Pakistan), Folkherbst festival in Plauen (Germany), and other festivals around the world: Fringe festivals in Australia and New Zealand (Sydney, Adelaide, Wellington etc) as well as many other concerts on festivals in Hungary, Austria, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Macedonia and also in Slovenia. Their club concerts are also well-known, as for example their performance in the club CBGB in New York.
On account of its authentic sound and texts the group has attracted attention of both music experts/critics as well as broad public. Their album “Adijo knapi” (Goodbye miners) has won several awards, e.g. the Golden bird prize (by the Liberal Academy of Slovenia), the reward of the student radio in Maribor - Maršev gojzar (Marš‘s mountaineering boots) and the local community reward. The albums “Adijo knapi” and “Melodije smoga in premoga” (Tunes of smog and coal) were nominated for “Slovene Grammy “ reward Golden Cock. The album Salamurca and the composition Na Kum (To Kum) have received the Golden Cock. Their album TETovirani 3 includes the composition PERKMANDELJC, for which they have made a video in 3D animation. The video has been very successful on festivals all over the world.
The latest record named ORLEK EXPRESS was released in December 2004. It contains 10 compositions, from very melodic and emotional ballads, to Orlek style convival folk punk polka rock compositions. The first hit of this record is adaptation of Mala Zagorjanka which was remade from pop to folk rock music. On this record there are two instrumental pieces: the first one is Orlek Express and the second one is the rhythmic ska composition Full House.

The band was formed in June 2001. They took off as a high-school punk-rock band, trying to have fun and play some music. After fooling around and changing a few members at the beginning, they finally found the winning combination with the current line-up in February 2002 and hit the stage with it in April for the first time.
Punk-rock is what they were sworn to in the beginning, but after a few turning points, the music took a shift in direction towards screamo, which is what their first album “Underworld Kingdom” sounds like (punk-rock/screamo), and post hardcore. However, it is hard to label this band with a certain genre, as their music is quite versatile.
The first breakthrough for them came with their first video for “Winter Song” at the end of 2004, followed by their debut album “Underworld Kingdom” in 2005. The band became international after winning second place among 92 bands at a European festival in Graz, Austria, called Newcomer in May 2005. That guaranteed them a place on stage alongside huge bandslike Soulfly, Mad Caddies, The Real McKenzies… Leaf-fat is highly regarded in other aspects as well: their music is/will be featured on a Elan (ski/snowboard company) promo DVD and on a California based production team DPC Films; their album was also voted in the top ten at a Slovenian alternative radio station; they were featured on www.europunk.net as band of the month (March 2006).
All in all, Leaf-fat are the kind of live act that won’t leave you indifferent. Their energy and power, devotion and self-confidence on stage will convince anyone who is willing to see them play, lend them an ear and give them a listen.
